About Bremer & de Jong

Bremer & de Jong was founded in 2005 by Hessel Bremer and Rinus de Jong. Both are experienced surveyors and were colleagues at the same company prior to the establishment of B&J. 

Rinus is a true grains and breakbulk surveyor, with experience gained among others at Beckmann & Jörgensen in the 1970s and 1980s. For Rinus, Bremer & de Jong is the second company he has worked for that bears the name B&J. Hessel Bremer, after completing a nautical education in the early 1990s, began working in the inspection sector at various inspection companies such as Saybolt. At these companies, Hessel worked as a surveyor for grains, edible oils and fats, chemicals, mineral oils, pre-shipment inspections, coal and ores, breakbulk, and also draught surveys. 

Both Rinus and Hessel were field workers before founding the company, and they still enjoy assisting in the field when necessary. Although Rinus is not a co-owner of B&J anymore and is partially enjoying his retirement, he remains closely involved with B&J. 

Founded in 2005

At its founding in 2005, there were approximately 5 permanent employees and a small group of freelancers for support. From day one, B&J consciously focused on providing surveyors to inspection companies. This way, B&J would never compete with an inspection company. Currently, there are about 20 permanent employees, and the group of freelancers has grown accordingly. On a daily basis, around 30 surveyors are working for B&J. 

The B&J team consists of people with diverse backgrounds and age groups. This healthy mix of individuals makes B&J flexible and versatile. There is a great deal of knowledge transfer within the team, ensuring that B&J remains a strong inspection partner in terms of expertise for the present and the future. The company culture is driven by the Rotterdam “no nonsense, just get the job done” mentality. 

Daily inspection services

Our daily inspection work covers a wide range of commodities. For these products, we assess their current condition and quality. The loading and unloading equipment is inspected for suitability and cleanliness, depending on the type of product. Samples are taken according to applicable standards and sent to the relevant laboratory, or stored in our sample room in Rotterdam. Weight determination can, for example, be carried out by a stevedore using (automated) specialized weighing equipment, where our people monitor and assess the weighing process. If no suitable weighing equipment is available, our staff can conduct a draught survey (using Pythagoras’ theorem) to determine the unloaded or loaded weight of a ship or storage vessel. In the case of (containerised) packaged goods or loose items, the quantity can be determined through a tally inspection. 

In all cases, our staff always act as the eyes and ears of the client and will defend their interests with full commitment. This has been the cornerstone of our service from day one of B&J’s existence and continues to be so today and in the future, as envisioned by Rinus and Hessel.
